The P. Y. and Kinmay W. Tang Center for East Asian Art supports the teaching and research of East Asian art. With seminar and lecture courses, public lectures and symposia, a publications series, museum exhibitions, and the scholarly work of its faculty and visiting fellows, the center supports and encourages continuing inquiry into those issues which help to shape East Asian art.
2008–2009 Fellowship
The Tang Center will not be offering a fellowship during the 2008–2009 academic year.
2007–2008 Fellow
ZHANG Changping, Professor and Vice Director of the Hubei Provincial Institute of Archaeology and Cultural relics and Vice Director of the Hubei Provincial Museum, is the 2007–2008 Tang Center Fellow. He will work on two research projects: bronzes from the Panlongcheng site and bronzes of the Western Zhou and Chunqiu state of Zeng. Having spent a number of years doing fieldwork and detailed analyses of the Panlongcheng bronzes, Professor Zhang will collaborate with Princeton Professor Robert Bagley to write a book on this material. He will also continue his research on bronzes from Zeng.
A central activity for the visiting fellow is participation with center faculty members and graduate students to discuss work in progress. The visiting fellow is also invited to participate in other activities, including seminars, colloquia, and public lectures. The fellow will have access to Princeton University libraries, including the Marquand Library, the East Asian Library, and Firestone Library, as well as to a wide range of activities throughout the University.
Applicants typically have a doctorate, a professional postgraduate degree, or equivalent record of scholarly achievement and cannot be in the process of writing a dissertation.
This year, preference will be given to applicants from the People’s Republic of China working in pre-Han archaeology. Only applicants who will be on leave from a continuing position are eligible.
The fellow will receive stipends commensurate to experience and credentials, and in consideration of external funding sources. The fellow normally receives stipends of up to one-half his/her academic year salary (not exceeding a maximum stipend set each fall) for the fellowship period, which extends from September 1 to July 1. The fellow’s home institution is normally expected to provide at least half of his/her salary in addition to all benefits.
The executive committee of the center evaluates applicants on the basis of:
- The significance of their proposed research and its relevance to the purposes of the center
- The quality of their previous research and their ability to benefit from the activities of the center
- The contribution they are likely to make to higher education in the future through teaching and writing.
