WORKSHOP
Fall 2015
Lo Archive

Principal organizer: Dora C. Y. Ching

Contributors to the Lo Archive project gathered for a one-day workshop to review and share research findings, resulting in refinements in their research papers. The participants were Dora C. Y. Ching, Richard K. Kent (Franklin and Marshall College), Cary Y. Liu, Jerome Silbergeld, and Roderick Whitfield (SOAS, University of London). Ching shared newly commissioned cave diagrams and translations of portions of James Lo’s field notebooks. The architectural diagrams provide a visual key to the different cave types, and selections from Lo’s field notebook revealed invaluable insight to understanding his process of photographing the caves. These papers were published in the Tang Center’s multivolume work Visualizing Dunhuang: The Lo Archive Photographs of the Mogao and Yulin Caves (2021) and also as a stand-alone paperback Visualizing Dunhuang: Seeing, Studying, and Conserving the Caves (2021).
